The main character Jake Peralta is the complete opposite. It starts with the detectives meeting their new Captain, Ray Holt who takes his job very seriously because he had to work so hard for it. The show has a main group of detectives that all have a strong bond. This makes them very different from others by leaving room for the viewer to decide if the joke was funny or enjoyable. Unlike other sitcoms, Brooklyn Nine-Nine does not use laugh tracks. They keep a good storyline that is easy to keep up with. Who writes the show description anyway? And for those who claim it isn't focused on much sex hasn't watched it.īrooklyn Nine-Nine is a good sitcom to just throw on the T.V. What are people thinking? It just is not for tweens.

I'd never show this show to a 12 through 16 year old. I on the other hand am sick of these terrible messages being given to our kids.

So if you don't care about your child getting these messages then go for it. yet there are others having sex just because, no love there. G) "Consumerism" isn't even mentioned yet the lead character buys things just to fill him apartment, ex: 4 leather massage chairs and loads more, just because "why not." "What Parents Need to Know" doesn't mentionĪ) all of the casual sex, the one night standsī) how drunk they get, as in so plastered they don't recall things (yet the description says "social drinking and drug use are played for humor.)Ĭ) that they commonly say the answer to difficulties should be getting drunkĭ) G-damnit, crap, S.O.B.s, porn, enjoying strip clubs, grind, masturbation, are constantly saidį) poking fun at how the lead character is 30 and keeps charging his credit cards to the max Overall, Brooklyn Nine-Nine can feature some inappropriate and even dark comedy at times, but is ultimately a very fun, inclusive show with positive messages that in my opinion far outweigh these issues.Īnd even then I'd suggest talking ahead of time about the sheer amount of casual sex and masogeny they will witness. Jokes will go over a very young viewer's head, while young teens can probably laugh at them at surface level.ĭrugs are involved as with any cop show, but are never glorified however, there are many instances of characters drinking and having fun. Not as squeaky-clean as a show meant for kids, but not nearly as rauncy as something like F.R.I.E.N.D.S. A running gag is the main character saying certain statements are the "title of sex tape"), but the most explicitly sex is seriously shown is with shots of characters lying in bed next to each other after the fact. The humor does get quite adult at times (E.G. Parents should be ready to have these conversations when the topics come up. However, characters do face adversity: Right from the first episode, the captain of the precinct is discriminated against for being gay and Black the bisexual character (revealed later) is not accepted by her parents there are storylines about sexual harrassment faced by women in the workplace, racial profiling, and more. In general, each male character is unafraid to be emotional and affectionate, and are essentially the perfect opposite of "toxic masculinity", making them great role models for young boys. The main character, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) is played as your classic Straight White Male, however, he often comments about inclusivity and opposes discrimination based on LGBT identities, gender and race. This show is often praised for its diversity and for good reason: it features main characters that are Black, Hispanic, gay, bisexual, and more, as well as strong female leads. One running gag involves a character revealing more and more details about his heinous crimes, and it is played for laughs as the main character is disgusted but needs to look past it because nobody else wants to be his friend). It is hilarious and always stays lighthearted, although sometimes veers into pretty dark humor because of this (E.G. You might be worried reading the tagline "NBC's Most Wanted", but Brooklyn Nine-Nine is far from police dramas such as Criminal Minds.
